My name is Gary JM Berreth, Tartan Designer. My qualifications for this craft were acquired after decades in related professions and after working with numerous kinds and classes of tartans. My designs fully demonstrate the experience I gained as a Master Kilt Maker, Cosmetologist, and student of Scottish history, Martial Arts, as well as Eastern Healing Arts. My designs employ an extensive knowledge of combining hues, using proven scientific knowledge of the physics of colour. Because of these skills, I possess an understanding relating to the complex visual concepts and the effective properties each hue has when placed next to another colour. My craft requires careful detail to the way colours contrast or harmonize when woven together. They can be constant, or create magnificent optical effects when they attract or repeal each other causing unique dynamic designs.

The White Thistle Collection was originally created to serve Corporate and Fashion Clients, but has been expended to service all the tartan discriminating clientele that appreciate fine works of art, using tartan as the main medium. All tartan works are created to be woven in pure virgin wool of Scottish origin.

The inspiration comes from my many visits to the beautiful Scottish Highlands, its glens, bogs, lochs, majestic verdant mountains, awe-inspiring shores and ever changing skies. When designing a tartan I use the Fibonacci mathematical sequences and Gematria Jewish numerology to guide my thread counts, as well as the ancient Oriental art of Feng Shui to achieve that harmony that makes each design unique, whether its from my existing collection, or a newly commissioned tartan. I offer these unique treasures as heirloom-quality wearable works of art.

Before embarking in the art of tartan design, I worked designing hair and cosmetics styles for a very loyal, discriminating clientele that sought nothing but the best, and always found unequal value for their unique requests. I then studied kilt making with some of the best instructors in Scotland and the world, and had a very successful career as a master kilter for 18 years, creating heirloom quality kilts, faithfully adhering to ancient traditions of the kilt making. I have fashioned specially commissioned, hand-sewn kilts for world-class pipers, models, clients world-wide.

I always cater to my client's wishes and use my trained eye to design and guide their instructions. Many requests call for a unique one-of-a-kind kilt for a fancy dress evening or special event. Many of my clients are repeat customers. Their proposals keep me busy creating new one-of-a-kind looks just for them. Patrons enjoy my complete and full understanding of tartan structure and my discerning eye for colour pallets, and most importantly my personal assurance of standing behind my work. In various cases, I have made kilts for multiple generations of the same family.

There is nothing more satisfying to a design artist than when clients return with more requests and issue the most adulating accolades about the work they have acquired from me.

I employ the world’s best and most reliable weavers, known for their exceptional quality consistency. With a limit-less pallet of colours, my designs are known for their harmony and uniqueness of the setts that comprise the tartan.

I am proud to have you as my guest to my website and preview some of the endless possibilities that I can create exclusively for you. Thank you for such honour.

Please email me for more information or with any questions about the process of obtaining a tartan form my existing collection, available for immediate sale, or how to commission your own unique tartan.
